Service Learning Pro

 

In order to effectively manage all community service and service learning activities at The University of Alabama, the Center for Ethics & Social Responsibility, in conjunction with the Community Service Center, administer the Service Learning Pro database. SL Pro provides a comprehensive web-based database through which all stakeholders in the service process – including community partners, students, student organizations, and faculty and staff – can communicate and organize these important relationships.

Service Learning Pro is an online database that provides information on, tracks and organizes all service-learning and community service activities at UA. SL Pro also enables us to compile a master list of all service-learning courses at UA to provide to students and others, and to track the total number of hours students devote to service both through service-learning courses and extracurricular community service projects.

How do I use SL Pro?

Students

Students can create a record of their individual service spanning their entire academic careers at UA, and faculty and community partners can determine the total number of volunteer hours logged for particular courses and projects.

Students may email slpro@ua.edu or Lindsey Thomas at lmthomas@aalan.ua.edu for login information and with any questions.

Listing a New Service Project

Faculty
SL Pro enables faculty members to fully manage their service-learning courses, track student hours, and mediate relationships with community partners and nonprofit agencies from one simple location.

SL Pro administrators can provide a 5-15 minute presentation to your class during the beginning of the semester on how to register for SL Pro, select the project(s) they’ll be volunteering with, and log their hours. If this is not helpful, administrators can provide you with instructions either electronically or by campus mail that you can distribute to your students.

Matching a Service-Learning Course to a Community Agency Project

Community Agencies

Service Learning Pro enables community agencies to manage community service opportunities for UA students from inception to completion, by:

        *allowing partners to post detailed descriptions of both ongoing and short-term or one-time service projects available to students, including specifics such as minimum time commitment, and days and times the project is available, orientations required before volunteer work begins, and various other helpful information for potential volunteers;
        *streamlining the registration process through an electronic student registration system;
        *providing up-to-date roster of current student volunteers and tracking service hours by student;
        *enabling student/agency evaluations and comprehensive reports to be generated at the conclusion of a project; and
        *maintaining archived records of all past student volunteers, service projects offered, class partnerships, and cumulative hours of service for the duration of the partnership.

 

Because the software allows for the management of curricular (service-learning) as well as non-curricular (volunteer) projects, community partners are also able to post volunteer projects designed specifically for service learning courses, search for faculty members seeking partners, and contact potential faculty members to establish a course relationship.

Greek and Student Organizations

Greek and students organizations specifically use SL Pro to manage their organization’s service efforts and track their members’ community service hours. In order for Greek organizations to effectively manage their members’ volunteer service, all members are required to create a personal profile in SL Pro.
